Anis Khan: Founder and Managing Partner
Anis has over 25 years international banking and micro and SME finance set up experience.
In 2005, Anis founded Development Finance Equity Partners, a pioneer private equity micro and SME financial institution fund
management company focused on managing investments into Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) on behalf of the Balkans
Financial Sector Equity Fund. To date the Fund has completed 9 investments into the CEE region.
Anis sits on the board of CEE Holdings, a micro and SME finance holding company with wholly owned investments across
Albania, Poland and Russia. Anis also sits on the board of Vaba Bank, a Croatian micro and SME bank.
From 2001 to 2004, Anis established a microfinance greenfield bank which was sold to leading Austrian Bank, Raiffeisen and
managed a bank transformation in Macedonia growing the customer base to 15,000 over two years.
Prior experience includes 17 years with Citigroup Switzerland in various senior positions covering the Institutional Clients
Group and Private Banking.
During 1981 to 1984, Anis worked for Saudi Siemens based in Riyadh where as CFO he arranged project funding for turn key
hospital projects in Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Sudan.
Shafiq Ahmed: Partner and Head of Operations
Shafiq has over 5 years corporate and microfinance experience.
Prior to joining the Lonestep team, Shafiq worked at a UK based investment advisory boutique focused mainly on UK and
India based transactions covering the agriculture, media, microfinance, retail, technology and textile manufacturing sectors.
In 2009, Shafiq co-established and co-founded Gaia Finance, a microfinance holding company and supported the rollout of
Gaia’s India operations across Delhi, Hyderabad and Tirupur.
During 2005 to 2007, Shafiq worked for Harrods Financial Services, where he managed the transformation of the financial
services division to the Harrods loyalty programme.
